"Ancient rights and liberties"

The English Bill of Rights repeatedly refers to ‘ancient rights and liberties’, ‘undoubted rights and liberties’, ‘the rights and liberties asserted and claimed’, ‘the true, ancient and indubitable rights and liberties of the people of this kingdom’.

So what were those ancient rights & liberties, so well known nobody wrote them down?

The right to be safe and secure against unlawful killing by your government
The right not to be tortured
The right not to be enslaved
The right to a fair and speedy trial with presumption of innocence (Habeas corpus and trial by jury)
The right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion
The right to freedom of speech
The right to freedom of association and assembly
The right to marry
The right to a private home and family life
The right to equality of opportunity
The right to peacefully enjoy one’s possessions.

Brits fought for these rights and liberties for centuries, a struggle described in our book. (See sidebar.)

Millions of people from all over the world have voted for these rights and liberties with their feet by moving to countries which possess them - Britain, America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
