Jeanette Winterson on what matters

An illness and a hurricane prevented us from blogging. We were lucky. The high winds took several large trees, but the house in New Jersey stood, and the sea was far away.

The house which kept us safe had survived almost two centuries. It had been built when wood in a hearth gave you heat. It was a few decades after Jeanette Winterson's house in Spitalfields was built. By the time she bought it, the house was 'a broken beauty'.

Winterson's reflections on saving that house, on having nothing and writing, on Jesus and on what matters can be found in yesterday's Stella. It's not available online, so we'll quote this

. . .the image of the Divine is stamped on the human soul. In other words - the most important things are not about money, and they are not for sale.
