Bill Moggridge, designer of the first modern laptop computer

Bill Moggridge, who has died at age 69, was the British industrial designer credited with creating the flip-open form of the modern laptop that is common today.

. . .Moggridge developed the design when he realised the flat-panel screen, keyboard and circuitry could all fit snugly together.

His laptop became a design standard, and even made its way into outer space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1985.

Ave atque Vale.

Seems so obvious an idea now, but not so then. Bill served as the director of the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York and as a visiting professor at the Royal College of Art. He was given a lifetime achievement award in 2010 by the Duke of Edinburgh.
