British and Irish art emerging from the shadows

"Christie's will hold a two-day sale of 20th-century British and Irish art Wednesday and Thursday, spanning figurative, abstract and Pop Art. . . .Of the sculptures in next week's Christie's sale, 'Rolling Over Horse' (1980) by Elisabeth Frink is described in the catalog as full of 'sensuality and a sense of freedom' (estimate: £120,00-£180,000)."

People in Winchester are very fond of Dame Frink's Winchester horse and rider. They stand on the edge of the High Street, as if they have just arrived from an ancient millennium.

"On May 31, Christie's will hold a sale of Victorian and Impressionist art. Top lot will be Dante Gabriel Rossetti's 'The Salutation of Beatrice' (1869). . . (estimate: £1 million-£1.5 million)". The painting lay hidden in Scotland for the last century.

The Salutation of Beatrice

Jane Morris was the painter's muse. "The painting associates Jane with Dante’s Beatrice, the incarnation of beatific love and the object of Dante’s courtly love. A sonnet by Dante pinned to the wall extols the virtues of courtly love: ‘My lady looks so gentle and so pure…’"

Amazing to think that the art market shunned the beauty of Pre-Raphaelite painting for years - but one house in Scotland cherished it.
