All hell let loose: The World at War 1939-1945

Max Hastings gives "strikingly detailed" pictures of people caught up in the war - "soldiers, sailors and airmen; British housewives and Indian peasants; SS killers and the citizens of Leningrad, some of whom resorted to cannibalism during the two-year siege; Japanese suicide pilots and American carrier crews" -
along with the big strategic picture.

A journalist, newspaper editor and historian, Hastings has spent 35 years researching and writing about the war. You probably won't agree with all his opinions - Australian soldiers were pretty irked with him about a previous volume - but this book sounds fascinating.
