Artist Ron Bone

He loved to paint stillness and tranquillity. This self-portrait, painted not long before he was diagnosed with cancer, is particularly beautiful when you can see the detail of the whole, the sunlit sill, the light gently gleaming on his jacket and face and his quiet gaze.

The Guardian has a beautiful obituary of Ron Bone, who was a kind family man and a fine artist who died before he had a chance to paint the new work he was moving toward.

Born in County Durham, Ron Bone grew up in the small, close-knit community of Consett. In the early 1970s he was one of the first in his town to attend college, going to the Bath Academy of Art then labouring in the steelworks to pay for more classes before attending the Royal College of Art in London.

His talent shone through early, and so did his artistic integrity.

He refused to stick with a powerful advertising agency, leaving to design record covers. When his wife Maggie's career brought them to Bath, he began to paint.

He won the attention of galleries and patrons for his still-lifes. Toward the end of his life, he began a new venture into portrait painting.

He was also a champion longbow archer. In his self-portrait, he seems to be looking toward the last shot from his bow.

Ron was "a gentle, modest north-easterner, the centre of a wide circle of friends" and family.

Ave atque Vale.
