British rescuers arrive in Haiti

A team of 64 of the United Kingdom's most skilled firefighters arrived in Haiti last night after being held up by heavy snow at Gatwick.

The team includes rescue dogs and 10 tonnes of heavy lifting equipment. It arrived in Haiti to begin a desperate race against time to save lives.

. . .Charity organiser Paul McPhun said: “We are getting mobbed by crowds of people. They just want help, and anybody with a car is better off than they are. We are seeing severe trauma, head wounds and crushed limbs.”

The United Kingdom's Department for International Development has donated more than £6 million. Many groups with relief workers in Haiti are urgently asking for help. Supplies of food and water are running dangerously low. Three million people may be homeless. Contributions can be made to Save the Children and Christian Aid.
