Gerald Warner

Gerald Warner's Telegraph columns can be revealing. 'Gordon Brown to apologise for the Norman Conquest' is one of his gentler lampoons. Some readers were uncertain the post was satire because there have been so many apologies in the news lately.

There are good reasons for apologies when they are made by the living to those they have hurt. But the apologies of politicians apologizing for people who are no longer alive - do they achieve anything besides a completely unnuanced view of history? Many of us would like to hear a politician apologize just once for his own actions.
