Michael Perham, who started sailing aged seven, and was the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic Ocean, aged 14, in 2007, has become the youngest person to sail round the globe single-handed.

He sailed nine months by himself. He endured knockdowns and damage to his yacht, Totally Money during the 24,000-mile trip. Almost all his technical equipment failed. He was forced to get repairs at several ports, so his entry in the Guinness Book of Records is described as "assisted".

Perham has accomplished a tremendous voyage.

He also has raised money for the two charities he likes best: Save the Children - a heroine founded Save the Children - and the Tall Ships Youth Trust, which helps young people gain confidence and competence while crewing tall ships..

Congratulations to Mike Perham for sailing with the spirit of Francis Drake, Nelson, Ellen MacArthur, Robin Knox-Johnson, Ben Ainslee, Francis Chichester and Captain Cook - to name just a few British adventurers.

It was on this day in 1966 that Francis Chichester sailed Gipsy Moth IV out of Plymouth, in his quest to circumnavigate the globe. He became the first person to circumnavigate the world solo, sailing west to east.
