Play the field

We walk over to a field on the farm that holds a large, white-topped stage. Glastonbury Tor can be seen in the background, glinting in the midday light above rolling Somerset Hills. It’s in this beautiful place that, on the last weekend of August, an amplified orchestra and a loose collection of musicians from the world of pop, jazz and the avant-garde will perform pieces from the classical repertoire. Hazlewood hopes they will be playing to a crowd rowdy enough to make over-enthusiastic clapping seem like the most innocent of sins. “The whole thing will be amplified to the hilt, so as far as I’m concerned teenagers can fight and toddlers can scream,” he says, looking out across the empty field. “I want to prove that Holst’s The Planets can be as much of a sensory overload as a concert by the Grateful Dead, and just as exciting.”

Conductor and broadcaster Charles Hazlewood talks about his outdoor concert plans.
