Heroic dog honoured on Hong Hong Kong Veterans Memorial Wall

I think you can learn quite a bit about people by watching how they treat a dog.

Gander was the mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada during World War II. A massive Newfoundland, he loved his men and they loved him. However, they didn't expect him to fight at their side.

In December 1941, the Japanese invaded Hong Kong. The Royal Rifles helped to defend the city. Seeing a live grenade rolling toward several of his wounded soldiers, Gander seized the live grenade in his jaws and ran toward Japanese lines.

He died in the explosion.

Gander's name appears with those of the Royal Rifles etched in the Hong Kong Veterans Memorial Wall, unveiled in Ottawa on Saturday.
