The painter of summer

John Constable painted Wivenhoe Park, now in the National Gallery, Washington, DC, in 1816, the year he was finally able to marry the woman he loved.

Constable, who was born on this day in 1776, always wanted to paint country scenes, and though this was the least profitable art form then available, he staked his life and his love on it.

His early artistic talents had not impressed onlookers. When he gave a small painting to the grandfather of the woman he loved, the work did not speak eloquently of his prospects and Constable was told he would not be allowed to marry her.

But Constable persevered in art and love. It's an inspiring story no matter what you are trying to persevere in doing. . .
