The quiet north

On my last two visits to Canada, I walked in snowshoes across a frozen lake; watched men ice fishing; cross-country skied through a forest; saw a wolf trot across an empty highway; was greeted kindly by Canadians wherever I went; sat in happy comfort with friends, dining on wild salmon in Vancouver's Fish House; and far to the north tipped my head back to see in the cold darkness the spangled lights of hundreds of thousands of stars - so many beautiful stars my eyes filled with tears.

The Canadians I met were working in mines; raising funds to build a school in Haiti; driving their ski doos; serving Chinese food; treating the ill; picking up hay with a tractor; and keeping their banks solvent.

Today the Times has more about visiting Canada.
