"The place was full of fragments salvaged from earlier lives"
Sissinghurst

Adam Nicolson, the grandson of Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, writes about living at Sissinghurst, and narrates a short video.
One of the most beautiful National Trust properties today, Sissinghurst was a muddy shambles when Vita and Harold arrived. They and their children built and planted. Later, Adam and his friends raced their bikes through the Lime Walk and "children from the village used to come to play hide-and-seek in the garden. All the gates were always open".
They are still open, but in a different way.
