The same man

I would not have thought of comparing writers George Orwell and Evelyn Waugh even if they were born in the same year, 1903. American author David Lebedoff does.

He shows in The Same Man, his study of Britain's two great 20th-century authors, that "Orwell and Waugh shared many ideals, preoccupations and fears. Above all they agreed on what constituted a nightmare vision of their homeland. . ."

In my estimation the Times reviewer is far bleaker than she needs to be. What interests us is that Waugh and Orwell also shared a belief in truth, goodness and happiness that arose from their experiences in Britain.

So does my co-editor and many other people.
