Refusing to accept defeat

Wello, writing to the Times from Normandy and Surrey, was elated by England's victory in the World Cup semi-finals.

Refusing to accept defeat is a characteristic which has served Brits well on many occasions. But why do we so often fail to respond until the odds are so thoroughly against us?
