Patriotism according to Gibbon - yes!

Edward Gibbon decided to write his History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire while musing on ruins in Rome in 1764. He described how Romans destroyed their republic with its form of representative government when they allowed it to be stealthily overtaken by a dictatorship, referred to as the Empire.

Gibbon's remarks suggested some remarkable parallels with the European Union, which we described yesterday. Today we'd like to end by quoting his very simple and powerful description of patriotism -

Patriotism is derived from a strong sense of our own interests in the preservation and prosperity of the free government of which we are members.
