Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in Iraq

We've talked about the Scouts on this, their 100th anniversary. Today the Times brings us Scouting in Iraq, where "the tradition lives on 80 years after it was introduced by the British" and eight years after Iraq's expulsion from the World Organization due to Saddam Hussein's manipulation of the children.

Scout clubs have re-emerged across Iraq over the past four years, with the total number of boy and girl Scouts rising from, in effect, zero to about 150,000. . .Iraq hopes to regain its full membership to the movement next year. It also plans to send ten Scouts to England next month to take part in the World Scout Jamboree in Chelmsford, Essex.
