Sir Edgar Elgar and Jacqueline du Pré

2007 is the 150th anniversary of composer Edgar Elgar's birth, and today the Telegraph scrutinizes his psyche. I'm afraid I may have engaged in some psychoanalyzing in the Constable post below, so let me say that I don't think anything I or anyone else says about an artist can tell you much about their art.

But Jacqueline du Pré can give you Elgar. Here she is a few short years before MS destroyed her ability to play. Called the greatest English musician of the last 300 years, she is performing the third movement of Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor, opus 85. Her husband Daniel Barenboim is the conductor. She is twenty-two.
