Born Free

My Series II Land Rover was built in 1964. It still runs, and I can still get the odd, spare part. It’s the classic shape of the Rovers used around the world in the 1960s. Ninety percent of 4 by 4s sold in Australia and Africa were Land Rovers. Mine is the same model as was used in the film Born Free, which told the true story of George and Joy Adamson as they returned Elsa the Lioness to the wilds of Africa.

I was interested to learn in the Telegraph that the 4 millionth Land Rover is going to roll off the production line and straight into the hands of Joanna Lumley, “not because of her absolutely fabulous acting” but because she is a founder-patron of the Born Free Foundation. The Discovery III is a more luxurious model than mine, and will be used for the "rapid response rescue" of wildlife by the Born Free Foundation.

The Born Free Foundation originated in 1984 when actors Virginia McKenna her husband Bill Travers along with their son Will, Joanna , and other associates started the "Zoo Check Campaign".

If I were rescuing the odd ocelot, I think it might feel more comfortable in my Series II. On the other hand, if I wanted to attend the Born Free Gala Ball on 15th of June, the Discovery would be my vehicle of choice.
