Visiting the American settlement

The Wren building at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. The name is a tribute. The building dates back to 1705.

The Queen has just visited the Jamestown, Virginia, settlement, four hundred years after it was founded by British settlers. The story of Jamestown's hectic and world-changing career is here.

This afternoon The Queen will be standing in the Wren building courtyard at the College of William & Mary. Two a cappella groups, the Gentlemen of the College and the Accidentals, will perform for her. Her Majesty is undoubtedly aware that William & Mary was founded in 1693 by a Royal Charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II of England and that it educated U.S. Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, and four signers of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
