Meeting history again for the first time

Jack Straw, leader of the Commons, called for a new vision in which British children were taught key events such as Magna Carta, the Civil War, the Bill of Rights, the fight for votes and the Second World War. He sees this as a way to shape their understanding of Britain and to unite different racial groups.

Historians called it “too little, too late” since the Labour government has spent the last decade marginalizing the teaching of history. I, too, wish the idea had occurred to Mr Straw earlier. I'm glad he appears to be taking it seriously now. His face in the newpapers suggests a worried man who has been looking into the future.
