Sutton Hoo

Edith Petty had heard that ghosts inhabited the mounds outside her house. At her urging, self-taught archaeologist Basil Brown carefully unearthed the mounds and delicately uncovered the great ship.

Before the discovery, historians had described Anglo-Saxon civilisation in England as crude. After the discovery of more than 40 treasures created at such high levels of artistic and technical skill, historians rapidly revised their opinions.
