Taxpayers flunk Brown's budget figures

Daily Mail letters reveal that many Brits grasp fundamental math, but may not see one essential piece in Chancellor Brown's dubious new budget figures. The letter writers rightly point out that the Chancellor's promised reduction of income tax will actually raise tax on the lowest earners and that increases in pension and fuel taxes eliminate any tax reductions for the middle class. They ask, where have all the £billions spent by the government gone? Surely not to improving education or the NHS.

They have gone to expanding the government payroll. Government workers now number close to one in four employed Brits and will be happy to keep Labour in power at the next general election.

Furious and acerbic and right on the money the letters are worth reading.
