Writing about 'ruthless Stalinist' Chancellor Brown, the The First Post says: "Running the economy means taking tough decisions and some departments and ministers inevitably end up losers. Brown believes having the guts to take hard and sometimes unpopular decisions is what strong leadership is all about."

That's what the Soviet Union tried to do with dismal results.

Running the economy is what is meant by socialism – Nazi socialism, fascist socialism, communist socialism, EU socialism. Until the mid-20th century it was never the British way for the simple and profound reason that it does not work.
