Cheltenham courage

The Cheltenham Festival began Tuesday, and "provides four days of high sporting drama among horses and riders in the Cotsworlds. It is the most prestigious meeting in the National Hunt racing calendar in the United Kingdom and very lucrative for winners.

The Irish had three winners on the first day, among them Philip Carberry and his sister, Nina, scions of one of the great dynasties in Turf history. As the Independent reports,

The fruit of this family tree has a sweet, intoxicating flavour. That much was plain to anyone who saw Nina leaping to kiss her brother on his return to the winner's enclosure, all the joy and sunshine of the Cotswold spring in her smile. But at its core lurks a kernel of toughness - from which is sown the bravura and impudence common to all three in the saddle.

The Cheltenham roar went up as Nina, pushed to the rail by her competitors, shot out of their grip and raced to victory. The Festival loves courageous riders.
