New Year Honours

Those honoured today by the Queen in the New Year Honours include:
Actors Hugh Laurie and Penelope Keith;
Ian Woosnam, who led a largely British team to victory over the United States in the Ryder Cup this year;
Steven Gerrard, Liverpool's captain;
Welsh rugby legend Gareth Edwards;
Yachtsman Michael Golding, who rescued a rival in the solo Five Oceans round-the-world race;
The Queen’s granddaughter and equestrienne Zara Phillips;
No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency mystery writer Alexander McCall Smith;
Margaret Howell, an original fashion designer;
“Globe-trotting” journalist Ann Leslie of the Daily Mail;
Explorer David Hempleman-Adams for his services to charity; and
Rocker Rod Stewart, whose album and singles sales top 200 million.

"It's great and I'm overjoyed," Stewart said after receiving the news at his home in Palm Springs, California. "Although I'm living in California, I'm very proud to be British." (Via the Guardian.)

The Guardian also reports, “Nearly half of the honours announced yesterday - 46% - have been nominated or supported by members of the public and 58% are for community service.” Politicians are notable for their absence from this year’s honours list.

There are an estimated 120,000 previous holders of major honours. One imagines an airy hall large enough to hold them all, and a bubbling toast. . .
