Something good

As most everyone knows, twenty-three-year-old Connie Fisher was plucked from obscurity by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the viewers of a television reality show who elected her to play Maria in the revival of The Sound of Music on the London stage. I thought she looked a bit gawky in stills, but when she sings just four lines from Something good she's enchanting. In video clips she has an ardent innocence and a lovely sense of comedic clowning, and meeting love and danger she grows stronger and deeper. I'm only judging from the musical's website, but how I should like to see her at the London Palladium with Alexander Hanson as her Captain and children who are "delightful, not simpering", according to The First Post.

Is there no possibility that government could get just a few favourite things right, the way theatre can?
